I am a lucky photographer… I will say it again, I am a LUCKY photographer!
Arash and Mona were married on August 29, 2015. Yup, on the day of Vancouver ‘Stormageddon’ 2015. It was the worst storm in my memory, winds of 80 kph snapping trees and downing power lines. Approximately 500,000 homes and businesses were without power and Stanley Park was forced to shut down (our planned location for portraits), due to danger from flying branches and debris. More than a few weddings were destroyed.
Fortunately that was not the case for Arash and Mona! They were married in the beautiful Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Vancouver. Even though we were in the heart of the uproar, the only thing we noticed was the noise of the rain battering the windows and there was a small flicker in the power… that is all, a small flicker!
Because of the rain, Mona decided she would prefer to stay in the hotel for all the photos, which was easy to do in the stunning hotel. After getting ready, the couple saw each other for the first time dressed in their wedding attire.
The ceremony was a mix of Persian and Canadian and the symbolic decorations on the Persian sofreh were truly spectacular! During the ceremony the close female relatives rubbed sugar cones above the bride and groom to shower them with sweetness and happiness. Also after the ceremony Arash and Mona fed each other honey to wish for a sweet life together.
The reception was lively with lots of dancing, including Mona’s sister doing the Persian knife dance. The idea behind the dance is for the couple to retrieve a knife from the dancer so that they can cut the cake. The groom shows off his wealth by offering money to the dancer until she decides he has offered enough.
With the party still going full swing, Peter and I made our way home and realized how bad the storm had been. Arash and Mona I hope you come through any storms in life as you did on the day you were wed!
